Exhibition Proposal

Water by water: an immersive exhibition project from the observed ocean to the memory of water on paper.

L’eau par l’eau

From the observed ocean to the memory of water on paper.

The exhibition offers a sensitive journey through the painting of the ocean. Surfing belongs to the formation of the gaze — reading swell, waiting for light, attending to movement — but the project focuses on a wider presence: the ocean as light, matter, memory and release.

Proposed journey

An immersion in five movements

The hanging should allow the gaze to slow down. Works respond to one another as sea states: observation, waiting, gesture, movement and memory.

01

Opening

Observe, wait, paint

The opening watercolors install the time of looking: standing close to the place, waiting for appearance, allowing the gesture to find its form.

02

Open-air painting ↔ studio

Direct presence and active memory

The journey shows a circulation between direct observation, notebook, plein-air watercolor and deeper studio work.

03

Swell and movement

The living time of water

The central works explore swell, backwash, foam and movement before they disappear.

04

Immersion

A contemporary presence

The ensemble seeks an almost meditative experience: entering the depth of water, light and paper.

05

ATLAS

Selected markers

A few documents may accompany the exhibition in counterpoint: publications, galleries, fairs and happenings, selected with restraint.

Works considered

A visual, breathing hanging

This selection replaces caption-only cards with a direct presence of the works. It proposes a first visual constellation: openings, swell, light, rumour, memory and the aftermath of the wave.

Opening I — Observe — Bruno Turpin
BTO-INTRO-001 · Watercolor on paper · 50 × 70 cm

Opening I — Observe

The horizon opens the visit: a breath before movement. The foreshore reveals itself with the tides; a memory of the ocean appears on paper.

Opening II — Wait — Bruno Turpin
BTO-INTRO-002 · Watercolor on paper · 50 × 70 cm

Opening II — Wait

Waiting precedes the gesture; within the foam, the gaze seeks the inner energy of water.

Opening III — Paint — Bruno Turpin
BTO-INTRO-003 · Watercolor on paper · 50 × 70 cm

Opening III — Paint

Light becomes matter; water becomes the very condition of painting.

The Roar of the Open Sea — Bruno Turpin
BTO-2025-001 · Watercolor on paper · 55 × 75 cm

The Roar of the Open Sea

A sonic presence of the open sea: rumble, crash, felt force before the breaking wave.

Light from the Open Sea — Bruno Turpin
BTO-2025-002 · Watercolor on paper · 55 × 75 cm

Light from the Open Sea

Light is not placed upon the water; it seems to come from within it.

Rumour of the Waves — Bruno Turpin
BTO-2026-002 · Watercolor on paper · 40 × 50 cm

Rumour of the Waves

The wave becomes vibration, a deep rumour crossing the surface.

Water Memory — Bruno Turpin
BTO-2025-005 · Watercolor on paper · 55 × 75 cm

Water Memory

A more inward proposition: water keeps the trace of gesture, passage and erasure.

After the Wave — Bruno Turpin
BTO-2026-003 · Watercolor on paper · 50 × 70 cm

After the Wave

After the passage, the painting holds what remains: breath, foam, light and afterimage.

Documents and journey

ATLAS can accompany the exhibition as a concise constellation of markers. Its role is to open context — publications, galleries, fairs, marine culture — while keeping the painting at the foreground.
