Painter of the Ocean

Bruno
Turpin

A life spent observing the ocean.
A body of work devoted to revealing its memory.

The ocean is the guiding thread of his work. From early paintings inspired by marine and surf culture to today’s watercolors, Bruno Turpin pursues the same search: to seize the lights, tides, transparencies and movements of the marine world. Watercolor became self-evident: painting water through water.

Artist

A continuity

Marine culture and surfing shaped the gaze; the original acrylic works documented a first relationship to surf and oceanic worlds; watercolor now extends this research toward the ocean as central subject.

The Gaze

Being in the ocean

Surfing shaped the gaze. From the board, in the rhythm of tides and swells, Bruno Turpin gathered thousands of inner images: swells, waves, foam, transparencies, winds, changing lights.

But the work looks beyond surfing. Its true subject is the ocean.

A plein-air and studio painter, he observes the marine world from the water, shores, cliffs and foreshore. From these places the watercolors are born: paintings of light, movement and memory.

Painting water through water.

Open-sea notebooks

Observe

A living section, distinct from the gallery: not a second display of works, but the notebook of the gaze and gesture that bring them into being — painting open-air painting, returning in the studio, following tides, swells, cliffs, foreshore and the memory of the ocean.

International

Multilingual versions

The international versions offer a coherent reading of the work for galleries, curators and institutions outside France.
